BRIEF HISTORY OF THIS BUILDING
FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST

Construction began in the late 1920’s. Services began in the basement in 1929, which is now the Sunday School. Work on the upstairs progressed until services were moved to the main sanctuary in 1935.

The church was dedicated in 1940. Christian Science church buildings are dedicated when all debts for their construction have been paid off. It is important to remember that all this happened during the
Great Depression.

The building is probably the only example of Classical Revival architecture on Monument Avenue. The architect for the building was Marcellus Wright, Sr., a longtime member of the church.

Note that all of the interior lighting is “indirect” was was considered to be very contemporary at the time. The sconces and the dome have lights which throw light upward either against the walls or on the surface of the dome.

The church was located at the corner of Park Avenue and Meadow Street from 1909 until the move to this location in 1929.
